Positive Behaviour Support

(NDIS Funded)

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based, person-centred approach that aims to improve an individual's self-esteem, confidence, interpersonal relationships, and quality of life by understanding the reasons behind challenging behaviours and developing strategies to reduce them.

Who is Positive Behaviour Support For?

Positive Behaviour Support is recommended when individuals with a diagnosed disability exhibit behaviours that are concerning or create difficulties for them or for those around them. These behaviours may, at times, impact their safety, quality of life, and/or their ability to reach their full potential.

Assessment

The first step in the PBS process is conducting a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA). An FBA is an evidence-based, systematic assessment process that collects data from multiple sources to identify and understand the form, context, and function of challenging behaviours.

During this step, practitioners collect information via observing the individual in different settings, interviewing their loved ones and carers, and conducting various surveys and assessments. From this, a comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) can be created.

Plan

Using the insights gained during the assessment stage, practitioners work collaboratively with the individual and their support network to develop a tailored plan that reflects the person’s needs, goals, strengths, and everyday environment. This planning stage focuses on identifying practical strategies that promote positive behaviour, skill development, and meaningful participation in daily life.

The plan is designed to be realistic, supportive, and centred on the individual, ensuring their preferences and priorities are respected. By creating a balanced approach that builds capability, reduces barriers, and strengthens support systems, the plan aims to empower the individual and those around them.

Implementation

We work with individuals, their families, educators, and support providers to actively implement the recommended strategies in the individual's day-to-day life. This is because the best outcomes occur when strategies are implemented consistently across all facets of the individual's life, including at home, at school, and in community settings.

We also continuously monitor and evaluate an individual's progress to ensure the BSP remains relevant and make adjustments if needed.
